Victim, driver in Dale Co. fatal hit and run both identified

DALE COUNTY, Ala.-- Authorities now know the identity of the man involved in the fatal hit and run accident, known as 53 year old Sammie Littlefield Jr. of Clio, the owner of a Ford F-150.

Authorities have been in contact with Littlefield, and conducted a number of interviews, but at this time, he has not been arrested or charged in relation to the accident.

Littlefield reportedly says as the time of the accident, he thought he had hit a deer and continued driving.

On Saturday, police received a call releasing information of possible involvement.

“He was escorted to the police department, we spoke about the incident, and it was indeed the truck that hit the individual," said Newton Police Chief, James Gresham.

Authorities are now confirming that the accident happened around 7 p.m. Thursday evening.

Police are now waiting for subpoenas, medical records, toxicology and other paperwork to be forwarded to the district attorney's office to decide if there will be any pending charges.

The case could potentially be forwarded to the grand jury.

The case remains under investigation.

A body found in Dale County Friday morning in a ditch on Alabama Highway 123 near the intersection of Dale County Road 43 near the town of Newton has been identified as 32-year-old Justin Wallace of Daleville.

Law enforcement got call about an unresponsive man on side of road who was believed to have been hit by a vehicle. The Dale County coroner confirms Wallace died due to multiple blunt force trauma injuries from a vehicle.

Investigators pieced together a headlight to determine the type of vehicle which might have hit Wallace so they can find the hit and run driver.

Suspect in 'execution' outside Dothan nightclub arrested

DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) - The suspect in a weekend homicide investigation in Dothan is now in custody and is being held without bond, according to the Dothan Police Department.

Brandon Allen Ransom, 29, is accused of fatally shooting Chris Bailey, 26, outside a nightclub in the 1100 block of Montgomery Highway early Saturday morning.

Capt. Will Benny with the Dothan Police Dept. called the shooting an "execution". Bailey was shot five times around 1:30 Saturday morning. Benny said the victim was shot once in the arm and once in the leg. "He fell to the ground, and the suspect...stood over and shot him three more times."

Bailey's body was found in the Plum's Lounge overflow parking lot in front of Piggly Wiggly, and he was pronounced dead on the scene.

Benny confirmed both the suspect and victim had been inside the lounge at some point prior to the shooting. "Was it a direct result of the club? Probably not," he added.

Benny would not comment on a possible motive, though he confirmed it "was not a robbery. He [Ransom] went there to kill this man."

An investigation is ongoing and more arrests are possible.

Trial rescheduled for Dothan man facing murder charges

second trial has been rescheduled for September for a Dothan man whose first murder charge was dismissed.

Brandon Allen Ransom, 31, is charged with murder in the July 30, 2016, ambush shooting of 26-year-old Christopher “Chris” Bailey. His trial was scheduled to begin the last week of September 2018, but all the state witnesses did not cooperate by attending the trial, and the charge was dismissed by then-Circuit Judge Michael Conaway.

A Houston County grand jury indicted Ransom a second time on the murder charges in November 2018, and Ransom was re-arrested in January.

Ransom’s defense attorney James Parkman entered a plea of not guilty and waived Ransom’s arraignment hearing Feb. 4.

Ransom’s trial, originally set for Aug. 5, is now tentatively scheduled for Sept. 23 before Houston County Circuit Judge Butch Binford.

Dothan Police Investigator Jared Bladen testified during Ransom’s bail hearing, saying police had two eyewitnesses who identified Ransom as the shooter in an “unprovoked ambush attack” outside a local nightclub that left Bailey dead.

Bladen said Ransom shot Bailey as he walked back to his car outside the Plum’s Lounge nightclub located on Montgomery Highway. Police responded to what was initially reported as a critical firearm assault outside the nightclub, and arrived to find the victim dead in the parking lot, Bladen said.

Bailey suffered seven gunshot wounds during the shooting, including one to the head, two to the back, two more to the chest, and another to the arm and leg, Bladen testified.

Ransom is currently out of jail on a $60,000 bond.

Trial continued for Dothan man charged with murder

A second trial has been continued until December for a Dothan man whose first murder charge was dismissed.

The motion said Parkman did not receive a copy of the trial docket and was scheduled to be out of state Tuesday.

Ransom previously entered a plea of not guilty.

Houston County Circuit Judge Butch Binford issued an order granting the continuance, and tentatively scheduled Ransom’s jury trial for Dec. 2.

15 Year Old Is Killed In An Accident Near His Home

NEWVILLE, AL (WTVY) The Jenkins family will never be the same as their 15 year old son was killed Wednesday, in a violent collision.

"It's very tragic seeing the family living right next door. it's a close knit community. he lived right next to his grandmother and he would be been 16 in a couple of days", said A.L.E.A. Troooper Kevin Cook.

Cody Jenkins was just taking out the trash, “bringing in some trash cans” as Cook put it when he was hit and flung approximately 150 feet away by a Chevrolet Impala. He was killed as a result of 27 year old Jeremey Carruthers of Abbeville, swerving, along County Road 73 in Newville.

"In this community that we live in everybody knows everybody. you may not know them personally but you know their parents or know their grandparents", said Derek Wright, the Coroner who was on the scene.

Wright went on to mention that Jenkins’ grandfather actually use to work for Fire and Rescue and they’ve worked together on a number of cases. Jenkins said he didn’t know Jenkins’ grandson, personally but he has children that did. In a small community everyone knows everyone. But still Wright said the teens grandfather never imagined he’d have another scene, just this time would be for a relative.

"That’s what the granddaddy was telling me. he said i've. said as many times as we've worked wrecks and said i never thought I’d be here in my own front yard and be my own grandson”, said Wright.

For Carruthers, he was not injured on the scene after also hitting two other cars and not coming to a stop until he hit an electric pole. He is charged with murder and is currently being held at the Henry county jail. His blood was drawn, to see if he was under the influence.

Press Release: Enterprise Police Department - April 12, 2016

On April 11, 2016, at 6:51 PM, the Enterprise Police Department responded to a shooting at Boulevard Apartments 1320 Rucker Blvd. Enterprise, AL. Upon arrival, EPD Officers discovered a male victim with two gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to the hospital and is in critical condition at this time.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that the suspect fled the scene driving a light in color compact car. The suspect is described as a black male in his early 20’s wearing blue jeans, red shirt, and black shoes. This is an active investigation and no further information will be released at this time.

The number of shootings in Enterprise continues to mount, with the first April incident at the Daleville Lounge and the second on Flemming Street. Then, on April 11, 2016, a 911 call led police to the Boulevard Apartments, where the third shooting took place.

“When officers arrived on scene, they discovered a young male with two gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to the hospital,” said Sergeant Billy Haglund with the Enterprise Police Department.

The victim was identified as Thurston Yavari Allen of Daleville, who died at the hospital hours later. A search is now underway for the suspect, who witnesses say drove away in a light-colored compact car.

"The suspect is described as a young black male in his early twenties, wearing a red shirt, blue jeans and black shoes,” Haglund said.

Haglund said the number of shootings is unusual.

"Usually, in the summertime, we have an increase in criminal activity. I think that's nationwide. But, for this time of year, I think it's pretty atypical,” he said.

There is no word yet on the relationship between the suspect and victim involved in the incident last night. The suspects in that case and in the Daleville Lounge shooting both remain at large.

"We're working with other law enforcement agencies to try and apprehend the suspect from a previous investigation, and everybody in our investigation division is pretty much working around the clock to try and run down leads and follow up and interview witnesses,” said Haglund.

Thurston and Carlisha Allen saw their son's alleged killer face-to-face in court on December 12, 2016 for the first time.

"He looked at me smiling and laughing. How can you look at somebody's mother that you have taken their child and smile and laugh like you have done nothing wrong,” said Carlisha.

Thomanta Jones is accused of shooting their son Yavari Allen back in April at the Boulevard Apartments in Enterprise.

Judge Chris Kaminski agreed to reduce Jones's bond from $350,000.00 $75,000.00.

"[I'm] not pleased. I'm very upset, because he's a menace. He's just a menace to society, and I feel like the bond was too low, and he's going to be out before the end of the day,” Carlisha said.

"I just can't believe it. You know, you have somebody that's got caught with drugs and fire arms and other cases, and you're letting him out on the street,” said Thurston.

The defense attorney told Kaminski there was no confession and a gun was never found. The prosecution said there was no preliminary hearing confirming those findings.

"Judge Kaminski had not heard any of the facts that we believe to be evidence against Mr. Jones in assisting us in being able to prove his guilt, so the comments that Mr. Harrison made were a bit premature in that respect. The investigation is ongoing,” said Assistant District Attorney Josh Wilson.

Kaminski said he is not allowed to comment on the case.

"All I can do is ask God to put some kindness in my heart, because right now, the Bible says you can't get into heaven with hate in your heart. I'm going to hell if I die today,” said Carlisha.

They're hoping for a different outcome at the end of the trial.

"There's still a God. It ain't over. It's a long way from being over,” she said.

Jones was still in custody at the Coffee County Jail later in the evening. If he is released on bond, the judge has required him to meet an 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. curfew, with the exception of traveling to a job. He is also prohibited from making any contact with the Allen family.

ENTERPRISE, AL (WSFA) - A man has been charged in a stabbing death in Enterprise Thursday.

David Cunningham, 20, was arrested and charged with capital murder in the death of 33-year-old James Matthew Hill.

Investigators were called to a home in the 100 block of Walding Street shortly after 3 p.m. where they found Hill's body in the living room. He'd been bound, blindfolded, and stabbed numerous times in the head, neck, and shoulders, police said.

"I've seen a lot of terrible scenes in my career, and in terms it was a very brutal murder," said Enterprise Police Chief T.D Jones.

Coffee County Sheriff's deputies found Cunningham around an hour later on the north end of the county and transported him to the police department for questioning. Enterprise police say the suspect was charged with capital murder around 11 p.m. despite refusing to speak with detectives.

Neighbors say the victim suffered from cerebral palsy and seizures and that they believe Cunningham was supposed to be caring for him.

"It bothers me because I love both of them, and both of them was good to me," said Lola-Faye Ross, a neighbor.

Cunningham had a preliminary hearing Friday morning. In addition to the capital murder charge, he's facing robbery charges after property was found on him during his arrest.

Cunningham faces the possibility of life in prison or the death penalty in this case. He remains in the Coffee County Jail without bond.

On February 18, 2016, at 3:08 PM, the Enterprise Police Department initiated a death investigation in the 100 Block of Walding Street Enterprise, AL. The investigation started yesterday afternoon when the EPD Criminal Investigations Division was contacted by the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office with information on a possible body in Enterprise, AL. At 4:11 PM, the CCSO located the suspect in the North end of Coffee County without incident. The CCSO transported the suspect to the Enterprise Police Department for questioning.

Enterprise Police Department Detectives discovered the victim deceased in the residence on Walding Street. The victim was located in the living room of the residence bound and blindfolded. The victim received multiple stab wounds to the head, neck, and shoulders. The victim has been identified as James Matthew Hill, age 33, of 110 Walding Street Apt. A Enterprise, AL.

On February 18, 2016 at 10:58 PM, the Enterprise Police Department arrested and charged David Montel Cunningham, age 20, of Enterprise, AL with Capital Murder. Cunningham refused to speak with Detectives and was transported to the Coffee County Jail after arrest.

The Enterprise Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division (CID) is conducting this investigation. Enterprise Police have arrested David Cunningham on murder charges connected to Thursday's suspicious death investigation.

Investigators say Cunningham stabbed 33-year-old James Hill to death. Police found the victim bound and gagged.

Cunningham is being held without bond.

Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza held a press conference on January 9, 2016, announcing the arrests of the following individuals:

• Pamela Henderson Whitaker, 45, of Cottondale, Florida
• Eric Lance West, 35, of Slocomb, Alabama
• Joshua Steven Nance, 37, of Dothan, Alabama
• Dama Nell Clark, 41, of Dothan, Alabama

All were charged with capital murder in the shooting death of Paxton Wayne Kennedy, 23, which took place on Hartzog Road in Wicksburg, Alabama. Nance and Clark are in custody at the Bay County Jail awaiting extradition back to Alabama.

Whitaker and West will face capital murder charges under the complicity law, labeling them as accessories to the crime. Valenza said they have identified the shooter and motive, but declined to release that information, as the case remains under investigation. He did say, however, that all of the suspects knew the victim, he was the intended target, and to his knowledge, there is no blood relation between the victim and suspects.

Authorities said a 911 call on January 4, 2016, led them to the scene where Kennedy was found dead in a Nissan pickup truck from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Valenza said tips and other information led investigators to Panama City, Florida, where sufficient evidence was collected and helped them identify and charge the suspects.

Multiple law enforcement agencies were involved, including the Bay County and Jackson County Sheriff's Offices, the U.S. Marshal Gulf Coast and N.W. Regional Task Forces,, the Panama City and Dothan Police Departments, ATF P.C. Unit, Drug Enforcement Administration, ALEA, and Houston County District Attorney's Office.

Valenza said the motive may be released in the next few days at a preliminary hearing.

Murder suspect keeps bond following hearing

An Enterprise man suspected of murder will keep his bond after a bond revocation hearing held before District Judge Chris Kaminski on Monday, Dec. 11.

Joshua Mark Richard, 35, is the suspect in the murder of Joey Chandler, who was found deceased in a car at the Coffee County Stockyard in New Brockton on Dec. 22, 2015.

When he was first arrested and charged with homicide, Joshua Richard was held in the Coffee County Jail on a $150,000 bond.

Assistant District Attorney Josh Wilson told the court the state withdrew bond revocation charges during an Aug. 8, 2016, bond revocation hearing before Circuit Judge Shannon Clark.

According to intake reports, Joshua Richard was brought back to the Coffee County Jail on Friday, Dec. 1. Joshua Richard was charged with third-degree criminal mischief.

The first witness during the hearing was Joshua Richard's mother, Danette Chestnut.

Chestnut testified that she woke up one morning and heard what she said sounded like gunshots. She said she realized it was her windshield being busted, though she could not see her windshield from the window of her home.

She said she could see a white Lexus parked behind her car, which she said was that of her other son, Jeremy Richard. Chestnut said Jeremy Richard suffers from PTSD.

She said after she heard the gunshot-like noise, someone began to bang on her front door.

After a few moments of someone banging on her door and breaking her windshield, Chestnut said she looked back out of her window and saw an individual, who she said was one of her sons, running around the white Lexus in her yard. She said she did not see the face of the individual, only the back of the head. She said she knew the person as her son.

Chestnut said she saw the white Lexus drive away, and she said she believed Joshua Richard was the driver of the vehicle. She said she called her mother, then her husband and the police after the incident occurred.

Chestnut said Jeremy Richard helped Joshua Richard bond out of jail and lived with him. She said after he helped Joshua Richard out of jail, he never spoke to the family.

She said she received a message from Jeremy Richard after the incident where he admitted to busting her windshield.

Chestnut said she received a call from Joshua Richard while he was being held at the Coffee County Jail. During the call, she said he told her that he did not take part in the incident.

Chestnut told the court she also found a letter in her grandson's room that she believed was from Joshua Richard to Jeremy Richard.

She described the letter as "threatening."

The end of the letter, which Chestnut read to the court, included the phrase "will be 10 times more powerful than busting a windshield." She said the letter was signed by Mark, Joshua Richard's middle name.

Don Bush, Jeremy and Joshua Richard's stepfather, was then called to testify. He testified that he received a call from Joshua Richard while police were at his house following the incident.

Bush said Joshua Richard told him he needed to explain what happened. He said Joshua Richard told him that he was at Walmart and he found Jeremy Richard at their home.

Bush said he mentioned $3,000 for a bond amount that was paid, and he said Joshua Richard became upset about the amount being the cost for a windshield.

Jeremy Richard was the final witness in the hearing.

He testified that he broke Chestnut's windshield, and he said he told no one, including Joshua Richard, that he planned to break his mother's windshield.

He testified that he broke his mother's windshield by himself, and he said he tried to open the sliding glass door to her home, but it was locked.

Jeremy Richard said he drove a white Lexus and left before police arrived. He also said he had no knowledge of a letter that referenced a broken windshield.

Kaminski reinstated Joshua Richard's previous bond requirements following testimony.

Man charged with murder back in Coffee County Jail

An Enterprise man charged with murder is back in the Coffee County Jail.

Joshua Mark Richard, 35, was arrested July 25 after being charged with first-degree receiving stolen property and fourth-degree receiving stolen property in Houston County.

Richard is the suspect in the murder of Joey Chandler, who was found dead in a car at the Coffee County Stockyard in New Brockton on Dec. 22, 2015.

When he was first arrested and charged with homicide, Richard was held in the Coffee County Jail on a $150,000 bond.

At the time of the arrest, Coffee County Chief Deputy Ronnie Whitworth said Chandler had died "execution style from a single gunshot wound to the head" by what was believed to have been a small-caliber weapon.

The shooting occurred at the stockyard in the front parking lot approximately 15-20 feet from the roadway, according to Kenny Davis, an investigator with the Coffee County Sheriff's Office.

Murder trial ends in manslaughter plea deal

“Sometimes these things end in a whimper instead of a bang,” said renowned Enterprise attorney Paul Young after a plea deal was struck. “This is a tragedy all around.”

Joshua Mark Richard, 35, was sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in a state prison with a split minimum of four years active in a state penitentiary and four years active supervised probation on Oct. 22.

Richards was originally arrested and charged with homicide in relation to the murder of Joey Chandler on $150,000 bail.

Chandler was found dead in a car at the Coffee County Stockyard in New Brockton on Dec, 22, 2015.

At the time of the arrest, Coffee County Chief Deputy Ronnie Whitworth said Chandler had died "execution style from a single gunshot wound to the head" by what was believed to have been a small-caliber weapon.

Richard was then arrested on July 25, 2018, and charged with first-degree receiving stolen property and fourth-degree receiving stolen property.

The defense and prosecution both agreed that Richard had 714 days of jail credit to put towards his four years in a penitentiary so he will only have to spend about two years in prison.

Richard was surrounded by counsel, attorneys Young, Sonny Reagan and James Tarbox as he told Circuit Judge Shannon Clark that he wanted to enter a guilty plea for manslaughter as part of a plea deal, which was accepted.

Twelfth Judicial Circuit Assistant District Attorney Jeff Moore said that the plea deal had “the blessing” of the victim’s family.

The deal was struck during a recess that was only supposed to be 10 minutes before the trial would resume.

“No search warrant was issued for a (gun) shell casing that was never found?” was the question asked of a Coffee County Sheriff’s Department Deputy at a hearing held before Clark on Thursday, Oct, 18. “Correct,” the deputy replied.

During the hearing held before the start of the Oct. 22 jury trial, testimony from Coffee County Sheriff’s Deputy Ken Davis revealed that he could not prove the existence of a warrant to search the three vehicles that had been searched by law enforcement investigators in connection with the Dec. 22, 2015 shooting death.

In addition to not being able to produce proof of a search warrant’s existence, Davis said that no gun or bullet shell casing was ever found. “There was no evidence in the vehicle that we found tying (Richard) to the murder,” Davis told the court.

Richard’s attorneys also also told the court that after his arrest their client had requested an attorney at least six times during his hours-long interview with two sheriff’s department deputies.

When Davis told the court that Richard had not, in fact, requested legal advice, Reagan asked the 30-year law enforcement veteran to read aloud from Page 2, Page 7, Page 17, Page 22, Page 26 and Page 28 of the transcript of a recorded conversation the law enforcers had with Richard the night he was arrested. In each instance, Richard asked for legal assistance.

“We are not suggesting to the court that the weather ought to affect the constitutional rights of Mark Richard,” Young asked when Davis told the court that the excessive rains and cold weather that night prevented the law officers from a detailed search of the vicinity where they believe the gun would be found.

Reagan had Davis read aloud Page 16, Page 29, page 57, and Page 93 of the 95-page transcript in which Richard said he was hungry and was told he could have a cheeseburger once he told the law officers the location of the gun, that was never found.

Cowarts Woman Killed in Fatal Crash in Montgomery

Montgomery, AL The Montgomery Police Department has made an arrest in the Oct. 21 traffic death of 31-year-old Nicole Baldwin of Cowarts following an early-morning crash on Interstate 85.

MPD accident investigators charged Wesley Welch, 28, of Montgomery with one count of reckless murder. Welch, the driver of the vehicle in which the victim was a passenger, was taken into custody in the 2100 block of East South Boulevard. Following his arrest, Welch was transported to the Montgomery County Detention Facility, where he was being held under a $50,000 bond.

On Wednesday, Oct. 21, at about 4 a.m., Montgomery Police and Fire medics responded to I-85 southbound between Hall and Union streets after receiving a report of a crash. The crash involved a 2016 Toyota Camry and a 2001 Dodge Durango. Baldwin, a passenger in the Camry, was transported to a local hospital and later was pronounced dead. A second passenger, also an adult female, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. Welch, driver of the Camry, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

MPD’s initial investigation indicates that the Toyota Camry was traveling south on I-85 approaching Union Street when it left the roadway and struck the Dodge Durango, which was unoccupied and parked off the shoulder of the roadway. Accident investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash, and no further information is available for release at this time.
