Today Judge Moulton sentenced James Allen Chumney to 20 years in prison for the murder of his wife Christine Chumney.

Houston County Sheriff’s investigators arrested Chumney back in August 2007 on the murder charge. Investigators charged him with Murder after he allegedly fatally shot his 36-year-old wife. Chumney told investigators shortly after the murder that the “gun went off accidentally three times.”

Mrs. Chumney was shot three times with a 9mm handgun, once in the head, once in the chest and once in the abdomen area. District Attorney Doug Valeska said during the guilty plea hearing. She was shot to death at the couple’s home south of Dothan.

Chumney’s attorney Terry Bullard, the said his client had spent nearly three years after his arrest at Taylor Hardin, a state mental health facility. Chumney had contended at several hearings that he was not competent to stand trial before pleading guilty Wednesday.

According to Chumney’s Attorney Terry Bullard, His client received the minimum sentence due to his mental problems, and that at the time of the shooting he was on pain medication and this contributed to the outcome of that night.

According to Bullard, I’m convinced that at the time of the shooting he did not know what he was doing, because he’s often referred to it as an accident. Yet accident or no I am still guilty Chumney stated.

Dothan woman convicted of manslaughter

A Houston County jury convicted a Dothan woman of manslaughter late Thursday afternoon for the fatal stabbing death of her boyfriend in 2013.

Jurors deliberated for about two and a half hours before deciding to convict 37-year-old Tareka Green Stoddart of manslaughter. She had been on trial for murder, but jurors decided to convict her of the lesser charge.

Following her conviction, Circuit Court Judge Larry Anderson sentenced Stoddart to serve 16 years in prison.

Stoddart said she fatally stabbed 41-year-old Chad Thomas Clayton in the chest with a screwdriver in self-defense in the 800 block of North Cherry Street on July 19, 2013. He died from his injuries about two weeks later.

“We were tussling back and forth,” Stoddart testified on Thursday. “It was a fight.”

Stoddart said the stabbing happened because she was scared and defending herself during an argument.

Houston County District Attorney Doug Valeska asked Stoddart to demonstrate to the jury how she stabbed Clayton by using a pen.

“I was protecting my space,” she said. “I told him not to come any closer to me.”

Valeska questioned Stoddart about how she happened to be carrying a screwdriver at the time of the argument.

“I always (carry) something because I am afraid of dogs,” she said.

At the conclusion of Stoddart’s testimony, lawyers made their closing arguments before the jury started their deliberations. The jury had four options as they deliberated - guilty of murder, manslaughter or felony first-degree assault, or not guilty.

Dothan police investigators arrested Stoddart on Aug. 2, 2013, and charged her with felony murder. Stoddard has been held at the Houston County Jail on $500,000 bail since her arrest.

Valeska argued Stoddart murdered her former boyfriend, and her past history of violence with him showed she had the intent. Valeska reminded jurors of evidence, which showed Stoddart had stabbed and cut Clayton on three prior occasions before the fatal screwdriver stabbing. No charges were ever filed in the other stabbings.

Valeska also told jurors they never once saw Stoddart show any remorse during any of her testimony in court. Valeska called Stoddart cold and calculated because she fled the scene of the argument and didn’t stay to offer her former boyfriend help.

“She took his life and killed him, and then she ran off in the dead of night and left him,” Valeska said. “The family will get justice today when you convict her of murder.”

Attorney Arthur Medley, who represented Stoddart, told jurors his client’s former boyfriend died from an unintentional killing. He also said his client and her former boyfriend had been drinking that night.

“This wasn’t an intentional murder. It’s one singular puncture wound as the two of them were fighting,” Medley said. “We’re not disputing she stabbed him. She defended herself.”

Valeska questioned why, if Stoddart acted in self-defense, she didn’t stay and actually tell that story to police instead of leaving the scene.

“He paid the ultimate price because he was too good,” Valeska said. “This is murder. She did it, and the past history shows it.”

Dothan woman convicted in fatal stabbing wanted

A Dothan woman remains wanted for bail revocation in connection to the fatal stabbing of her former boyfriend.

Tareka Green Stoddart, 38, has been wanted for over a month after a local judge revoked her appeal bond for the felony manslaughter charge a jury found her guilty of last year.

Houston County Sheriff’s Capt. Bill Rafferty confirmed deputies were still looking for Stoddart.

Dothan police arrested Stoddart on Aug. 2, 2013, and charged her with felony murder in the stabbing death of 41-year-old Chad Thomas Clayton.

A jury found Stoddart guilty of a lesser felony manslaughter charge in May of 2015.

Stoddart said she fatally stabbed Clayton in the chest with a screwdriver in self-defense in the 800 block of North Cherry Street on July 19, 2013. He died from his injuries about two weeks later.

District Attorney Doug Valeska argued at trial how Stoddart murdered her former boyfriend, and her past history of violence with him showed she had the intent. Valeska reminded jurors of evidence, which showed Stoddart had stabbed and cut Clayton on three prior occasions before the fatal screwdriver stabbing. No charges were ever filed in the other stabbings.

Circuit Court Judge Larry Anderson sentenced Stoddart to serve 16 years in prison, but agreed to an appeal bond in the case while the Alabama Criminal Court of Appeals considered her appeal.

Stoddart was released from custody after she posted a $20,000 appeal bond in June 2015.

Court records show Anderson issued an order to revoke the appeal bond on Feb. 9, 2016, granting a request from the Houston County District Attorney’s Office. The request cited Stoddart’s failure to report to the probation office for weekly drug screenings in accordance with her appeal bond requirements.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Tareka Stoddart can call the Houston County Sheriff’s Office at 334-677-4808.

Testimonials

August 26, 2017:
My sister was beautiful inside and out. She was free spirited, kind and loved everyone she came into contact with. She never met a stranger and was fascinated by people and their stories. Everyone was Laramie's friend and she would have done anything for anyone. Her laugh was infectious, as was her smile. There will never be another like my beautiful sister.

I remember being young and looking under her bed for monsters and telling her she was silly for thinking monsters were real. She was right. Monsters are real and one took my sister from me. A monster took my sister from my parents. A monster took my beautiful sister from this world and the pain is unbearable.

Heaven gained another angel, but this world lost an angel. My love for my baby sister will never die and she will live in my heart and the hearts of those she touched forever. Rest easy, my baby girl, until we meet again.

Colter Cline, Brother

August 23, 2017:
Laramie Cline met an untimely death sometimes between August 12 and August 20. Her body was located in a state park in N. Little Rock, AR beside a lake on that date. Laramie loved her family and they noticed a pattern of change over a period of time that led them to believe that something had happened to Laramie, but never did they expect this ending!! This vibrant, beautiful, trusting young lady was friendly to a fault and believed the good in everybody and that is what led to this. Unfortunately, the family had not prepared for this event and getting her back to Ozark, AL and in her final resting place will be an expense that no one can tackle on their own. Her mother and best friend had back surgery on August 15 and this is really hard on her as it is the rest of the family.

A Samson man was shot dead three days after his 21st birthday during a dispute over a woman.

Authorities say Matthew Leske, of Kinston, shot and killed 21-year-old Brent Cook during a dispute early Wednesday in the front yard at Tasha Saulter’s home near Samson off County Road 10, according to Max Motley, Geneva County Coroner. Motley said Cook suffered a single fatal gunshot wound.

“He was shot in the left upper chest, and it exited on the opposite side in his back near his shoulder,” Motley said. “It’s a sad, sad world that we live in. We will cowardly shoot our way out of any situation.”

Motley said Cook, of Samson, had dated Saulter for years until a recent break-up when she started a relationship with another man. Gunfire ended an argument between Cook and Saulter.

But Geneva County Sheriff’s Investigator Tony Helms said Saulter’s new boyfriend, the 18-year-old Leske, fired that fatal shot killing Cook.

“They were outside arguing some, and he pushed his way inside the home,” Motley said. “He (Cook) pushed her and shoved her some more, and then she ran next door.”

At some point the argument led them outside the home into the yard. Motley said a rifle was likely used during the shooting which happened around 1 a.m.

Saulter lives at the home with several other relatives, but it’s unclear whether they were at home when the shooting happened, Motley said.

Geneva County Sheriff’s investigators arrested Leske, and charged him murder. He’s held without bond at the Geneva County Jail, Helms said.

“Matt was at the house, and Cook was shot to death,” Helms said. “Brent’s an old boyfriend and Matt’s a new boyfriend. It’s an argument that escalated.”

A Headland man apologized to nearly a dozen people Friday, moments after he pleaded guilty to the murder of their relative.

Johnny Thomas, 31, pleaded guilty to the shooting death of Larry Corbitt on April 11, 2006.

“I’m sorry, ya'll did make me part of your family,” Thomas said. “I don’t know what went over me that week. I pray one day that ya'll do forgive me.”

Circuit Court Judge Lawson Little sentenced Thomas to the maximum sentence on multiple felony charges, including murder. The sentences for all the charges will be served concurrently not consecutively. Thomas pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree assault, first-degree kidnapping, first-degree domestic violence, along with murder.

Mary Hayes, Corbitt's sister, testified at the hearing, and said Thomas was no longer part of their family.

“Most of all, Johnny, we loved you, and we tried to make you a part of our family,” Hayes said. “Someday God is going to let me forgive you.”

Corbitt, 53, of Pinckard, was fatally shot and a 52-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy were injured during the shooting, according to a previous Dothan Eagle report. Police said Corbitt was a cousin of Thomas’ wife, Latonya Thomas.

Thomas’ stepson, Chuckie, was shot in the buttocks when Thomas shot through a door. The woman, identified by neighbors as Juanita McKay, was shot in the arm and Corbitt in the back and shoulder area, according to previous reports.

Authorities say from all appearances 69-year-old John Coskrey shot his wife 65-year-old Carolyn Coskrey and then shot himself. A hand gun and a shotgun were recovered from the scene.

The bodies were found in the bathroom by a family member.

No note was found at the scene, but authorities are pretty certain no foul play was involved.

“Due to our interview with family members and friends we did uncover certain facts that lead us to believe this definitely was a murder suicide,” Sheriff Andy Hughes.

The bodies were transported to Montgomery where autopsies will be performed.

This is the first murder in Houston County outside Dothan city limits this year.

Ozark police believe a man whose body was discovered Monday is a murder victim though they are awaiting forensics tests before making a final determination.

While police didn’t immediately identify the victim, family members say he is Cornelius Crittendon, in his mid-30’s. Crittendon suffered a gunshot wound, Police Chief Marlos Walker said.

“A neighbor saw the (homes) door opened with an unresponsive person inside (about 10 a.m.) and called 911,” Walker told WTVY.

He theorizes the shooting occurred several hours before Crittendon’s body was discovered saying police received a report of a gunshot in the area about 2 a.m. Officers didn’t see anything suspicious when they responded to Ozark Estates.

“He didn’t bother anybody,” said the victim’s father, Barry Crittendon. While police haven’t revealed a possible motive Crittendon believes his son was killed during a robbery.

Walker said there are no immediate suspects, but multiple witnesses were interviewed. He hopes autopsy results will be available later this week.

A Henry County jury found Anthony Mitchell Money guilty of misdemeanor criminally negligent homicide on Wednesday. Henry County Judge Derek Peterson sentenced Money to serve one year in the Henry County Jail. The 25-year-old Headland man was originally arrested on a felony manslaughter charge for the death of Mary Deanna Curry, his girlfriend at the time, by Henry County Sheriff’s deputies. Records indicate the deputies arrested Money after a Henry County grand jury returned an indictment against him in June 2009.

The victim was 20 years old when she died on Oct. 16, 2006 from the injuries she suffered when she was struck by a vehicle near the intersection of Henry County roads 53 and 12 near Headland around 11:30 p.m. Curry died after the couple had been in a physical altercation when they pulled off to the side of the roadway where the domestic dispute continued, according to District Attorney Doug Valeska. “I argued because of the fight she was dazed and that he did not try to move her. If she was dazed she’s not going to see a car coming,” Valeska said. “He left her lying in the middle of the road and did nothing. She was unable to get out of the road because he assaulted her. I call it woman slaughter. I argued if you loved someone you’d make every effort to get them out of the road.”

Curry suffered a ruptured liver and spleen, along with a broken hip and ribs according to the pathologist that testified at the trial . The pathologist also testified about finding bruising around the neck and a black eye, evidence of a physical altercation. There was also evidence the motorist didn’t see Curry in the roadway, and made an effort to slow the vehicle down, said Valeska.

Money’s lawyers, Dustin Fowler and Stephen Etheredge, asked the court for an appeal bond and Judge Peterson said he’d set a bond on Friday. Valeska asked the court to revoke Money’s probation for a prior felony third-degree burglary conviction, after the jury’s guilty verdict,. He said Money received probation for a 10-year sentence on the burglary charge. Judge Peterson made no decision on the request, taking it under advisement.

Money also has two other unrelated sexual assault related charges pending against him, according to Valeska. Fowler or Etheredge, Money's lawyers could not be reached for comment.

Officer David Curtis and Police Officer Jeffrey Kocab were shot and killed while attempting to make an arrest at a traffic stop at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and 50th Street.

Officer Curtis stopped a vehicle because it did not have a visible license plate. He called for an additional unit to assist him because a male passenger in the car was wanted on a misdemeanor charge for writing a worthless check. When Officer Kocab arrived, he and Officer Curtis attempted to arrest the suspect. The suspect drew a weapon and shot both officers at close range.

A witness called 911 to report the shooting. Officer Kocab died shortly after arriving at the hospital and Officer Curtis was pronounced dead a few hours later.

The suspect surrendered and was taken into custody four days later. He was charged with five counts of first degree murder when it was determined he had committed three other murders in Tampa. On November 15th, 2013, he was convicted of murdering both officers and the jury subsequently recommended he receive the death penalty. He was formally sentenced to death on May 30th, 2014.

Officer Curtis had served with the Tampa Police Department for three years and eight months and had previously served with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. He is survived by his wife, four young sons, parents, and twin sister.
